What to do when someone is not hitting their points: when you have a member who isn't hitting their points quota, they should be approached by executive board and/or standards board. It is generally recommended to inform membership throughout the semester of their current points standing so they know how many more they need. If a member still has not hit their points threshold, then a meeting with the executive and/or standards board is necessary. It is recommended to have these disciplinary meetings with one member at a time, rather than a group of members who didn't hit their points - that way everyone can have their fair say before action ensues. Additionally, we recommend having something in place for when members do not meet their point requirements or attend required events. This does not have to be super strict, but it can be something motivating enough to members who may not be as active and engaged in the chapter. An example of this can be a fine, not being able to attend a popular event, or having them meet with the standards board about their engagement. Consequences and disciplinary action is up to chapter discretion and should reference their respective bylaws.
Reference Bylaws: it is good measure to review your chapter bylaws with your executive board and general membership frequently, so that everyone is up to date on requirements and consequences. These should be updated annually. These are important to reference to make sure everyone is held to the same standard and that all consequences can be enacted equally.
Strike System: strikes are generally the most effective way to ensure chapter engagement and participation. Strikes are to be communicated verbally and in writing (professionally via email) Although up to chapter discretion, a good rule of thumb is to enact a three strike system:
Strike one: verbal and email communicated warning
Strike two: verbal and email and a meeting with standards or executive board
Strike three: verbal and email dismissal from chapter
Depending on severity of action, standards and/or executive board may advance straight to removal from chapter (strike three). Strikes are to be given for any violation of chapter constitution bylaws. These can include (but not limited to) the following:
not paying dues
even late payments
not attending required events
chapter, recruitment, voting, etc.
not hitting points threshold
low GPA
removal from university
Immediate removal from chapter (strike three) is warranted upon violation of National bylaws.
You know how the saying goes... "There's always that one person". Within your chapter, chances are there may be that one person. However, it's imperative to outline all bylaws and expectations at the beginning so everyone is held to the same standard and can avoid running into issues.
